Why Are We Called Chemwash?

We get this question a lot, and it’s a good one. The name “Chemwash” goes right back to our beginnings in 1981, when we introduced something brand new to the New Zealand cleaning industry: low-pressure exterior washing.

At the time, most exterior cleaning was done using high-pressure water blasting, a method that often did more harm than good. We wanted to pioneer a better, safer way. Our system used a specially developed detergent, paired with low water pressure, delivering great results without risking damage. This innovative approach needed a name that reflected our difference, and so, ‘Chemwash’ was born.

What makes our methods different?

The Chemwash system works in two key stages:

1. Apply Detergent
   We start by applying our specially formulated detergents (more on that later), which are tailored to suit the surface and type of grime we’re dealing with. The detergent breaks down the dirt, mould, and other unwanted build-up.

2. Rinse Gently
   Secondly, we rinse everything off using low water pressure, generally between 600psi and 1,000psi. That’s gentle enough to avoid damaging any surface, but powerful enough to leave it looking like new.

This method is completely different from traditional water blasting, which can use over 2,000psi, and sometimes up to 5,000psi. This relies on sheer pressure alone to do all of the cleaning. Unfortunately, that kind of pressure can splinter wood, damage paint, and even take away a thin layer of the surface itself. Our system gets the job done without putting your property at risk.

Why did we choose that name?

Back in the early days, our use of professional-grade detergents was what really set us apart. After all, it was a real innovation at the time! While high-pressure blasting relied solely on force, our method used chemistry to do the heavy lifting, followed by a gentle rinse. That’s how we landed on Chemwash, a wash that works because of the chemical action, not sheer pressure.

Even today, this is what makes us different from many other exterior cleaners, though others have since followed our lead into low-pressure methods.

What’s in our detergents?

In terms of ingredients, it’s very possible that you’ll find all of them under your kitchen sink! They’re fairly similar to standard household cleaners, just blended for professional use. As every job is different, we do adjust our detergent formulation to suit the onsite conditions, such as surface material or other environmental factors.

In some rare cases, we might need to use stronger solutions to tackle particularly stubborn contamination. If that’s necessary, you’ll be told in advance, and our trained technicians will take all the right precautions to keep your property safe.

Are our detergents safe?

Absolutely. All Chemwash detergents have been developed by a leading industrial chemist to ensure they’re safe for use on any exterior surface, from your painted cladding to your concrete paths and timber decks.

We’ve also made sure they’re environmentally responsible. Our products are biodegradable, and formulated to be safe around people, pets, and plants. In short, they’re tough where they need to be, and gentle where it counts.
